Transcranial magnetic stimulation, drug-free treatment with no systemic side effects
Inspire TMS Denver is pleased to announce that they have opened a new clinic in Denver offering TMS therapy. The clinic specializes in rTMS, or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (commonly abbreviated to just TMS) is a treatment that requires no medication and is free of systemic side effects. It is provided in an outpatient setting and is a non-invasive treatment that uses electromagnetic fields similar to those generated in an MRI to stimulate brain activity at specific locations on the outer cortex. The primary indication for TMS is treatment-resistant clinical depression – non-responder and/or intolerance to antidepressants. TMS was approved by the FDA in 2008 for the treatment of major depression and additional indications are being identified. For example, in 2018 it was also approved for the adjuvant treatment of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder). TMS targets dysfunctional circuits in the brain associated with mood, anxiety, and other mental health symptoms. TMS increases neuroplasticity and restores proper brain function to these dysfunctional brain circuits. It is a proven method of reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety with long-lasting results.
The effectiveness of TMS is supported by a solid evidence base with higher response and remission rates compared to standard treatments such as repeated medication trials and/or therapy. dr Samuel Clinch, Founder and Medical Director of Inspire TMS Denver believes TMS is an underutilized treatment and hopes to improve education about TMS for patients and the community. TMS is generally recognized as safe, with few contraindications to treatment. It can be combined with current drug treatments or used alone for people who are intolerant to or have not responded to medication. The procedure is very well tolerated, with only the occasional mild headache or sensitive scalp for the first few sessions. Each treatment session can be completed in approximately 20 minutes and with certain newer and more advanced protocols, treatments can take as little as 3 minutes. Depending on the condition being treated, a typical TMS course is 30-36 sessions, 5 days per week on weekdays, spread over 6-9 weeks.
Inspire TMS Denver currently serves the Denver metropolitan area. Patients can take advantage of a free initial telephone consultation to determine if TMS is a good solution for their condition(s). Staff coordinate and perform all benefit and eligibility checks and prior approvals to ensure patients are maximizing insurance benefits and are fully aware of all treatment costs. All major insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare and Tricare, and tiered pay-as-you-go plans are available if needed. The center works with patients’ physicians and treatment providers to ensure that TMS therapy is delivered in a manner consistent with other caregivers and their prescribed treatments. Patients have access to their own unique health records portal and can access health records, fill out forms and questionnaires, and communicate directly with the Inspire TMS Denver team through the portal.
